Zumba Dance fitness Classes at Wren Hall on Thursday mornings 10.00am with helen lakin and Monday Evenings 6.15pm with Helen Lakin and Caron Tromans
Hello, I’m Helen (Lakin) and you might say I’m a bit of a Zumbaholic!
I took my first Zumba Dance Fitness class as a student nearly 11 years ago and immediately became hooked. The music was upbeat and made me feel good, the steps were soon learned after a couple of classes and I was exercising and burning calories without actually realising it, as I was having so much fun. I finally found a style of cardio-vascular exercise that I actually enjoyed! I remained a dedicated (four times a week) student for many years and then in 2017 I decided to take my Zumba Licence, which I achieved the same year. That enabled me to teach classes of my own.
Zumba is for everyone – all ages and abilities. The beauty of Zumba is that every move can be adapted to suit individuals. We are all different, for example some of us have knee problems, others back problems, some may have a touch of vertigo and the lucky ones hopefully will be fighting fit! But whatever your level of ability and fitness, Zumba will allow you to enjoy the music and move within your own capabilities – there is always an alternative to every move to make sure it works for you. I know he wouldn’t mind me mentioning, that I have a gentleman who is 85 years young who attends my Zumba classes at a local Gym 3 times a week, he loves the classes and everyone loves him! So age should certainly not be a barrier to exercising.
Zumba is based on 4 basic Latin dance rhythms, Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia and Reggaeton, each song has a routine and the moves repeat throughout the song, helping you to get to know the choreography fairly quickly. But it’s important to remember …. “there are no wrong moves in Zumba, only accidental solos!!” It’s not about perfectly dancing every routine it’s about working out in a friendly atmosphere with other people and having fun. The music is varied and upbeat, some of it very Latin inspired and some pop music but all of it gets you moving and gets the endorphins flowing.
Many research studies have been undertaken into the psychological effects of Zumba and the results are very positive in terms of its benefits to overall mental health
- It boosts your memory
- Helps you to focus better and lengthen your attention span
- Increases the production of neurochemicals that promote brain cell repair
- Prompts growth of new nerve cells and blood vessels
- Boosts decision making skills
- Improves multi-tasking and planning
But above all, it’s fun!
